Canoe Family
|
The Samish Canoe Family is a volunteer group of tribal members, friends and relatives, and our numbers have grown from about a half dozen in 2002 to more than 50 who actively participated in the summer of 2006. With no paid positions, we rely on mostly our own efforts to fundraise, with occasional matching funds offered by our Tribal leaders. A limited amount of support is derived from the Prevention funds through our Tribes DASA contract; typically we utilize those funds for securing food for our host responsibilities.
We enjoy practicing, making small local outings, and whenever possible answer the invitations to bring our canoes to local festivals and events. 2010 Samish Canoe Family Registration Form IMPORTANT DATES March 20th 9 am Ceremony to brush off the canoes followed by practice (RV Park) March 28th Skippers Meeting at Suquamish departure time TBD call Leslie if interested in attending April 10th assemble at 12:45 in regalia for 1 pm performance at Health Fair (RV Park) April 17th 9 am practice (RV Park) May 22nd Penn Cove Water Festival 9 am at RV Park to Coupeville, all day, return by about 6 or 7 pm (this will be monthly weekend practice for paddlers and first fund raiser, need ground crew to help transport materials and staff our tee shirt booth from 10 to 5) May 28th to 30th Pre-Journey Site visit to Neah Bay for interested ground crew and paddlers June 19th Salish Sea Day at Bowman Bay (Fund raiser paddlers offer rides to the public, ground crew helps to staff our tee shirt booth & cater a meal for public plan to buy your meal ticket; artists demonstrate weaving, carving, etc; share open Journey songs & dances with visitors) Meet at RV Park by 10 am return by 5 pm June 26th 9 am practice RV Park (and as an optional activity later on during Cultural Day) June 27th 8 am practice RV Park before General Council Meeting July 4th RV Park Fireworks time Indian Taco sales and canoe rides fund raiser contact Leslie for details. 2 pm to 10:30 pm July 7th Lummi Landing for Canoe Journey & Skippers Meeting time approximate afternoon/evening July 8th Samish Landing for Canoe Journey time approximate mid afternoon arrival (need lots of volunteers with on and off site food preparation, delivery, food line setup, serving and clean up afterwards) Samish Tribal Journey Hosting will be at Bayview State Park on July 8th serving dinner and offering overnight camping for canoe families, and breakfast served to paddlers and ground crews on the 9th.
