Description

The Climate Adaptation Assistant provides general research assistance for the Samish Indian Nation Climate Adaptation Working Group. The Climate Adaptation Assistant will report to the Natural Resources Director and will work closely with project partners on Climate Adaptation issues as directed. The Department is tasked with preserving, enhancing, and restoring Natural Resources relevant to the Samish Tribe.

Principle Duties
  1. Takes direction and provides follow-through with projects until completion with little or no supervision
  2. Works across departments to identify potential natural resources, cultural, planning and human health effects of sea level rise and climate change impacts to Samish Tribal members and organizations.The objective is to assist a culturally appropriate climate adaptation planning process based on Samish values and current scientific data
  3. Participate in Samish Climate Adaptation Working Group meetings with Samish staff and council members to collaboratively work toward Climate Change Resilience
  4. Supports the activities of the Samish Climate Adaptation Working Group by providing information and facilitating meetings
  5. Conduct research to identify latest climate change projections for Samish Traditional Territory.Writes reports proficiently as directed
  6. Initiates and maintains positive, respectful working relationships with all Tribal staff and Climate Adaptation Working Group volunteers and Tribal Members to foster a team environment. Initiates and maintains a positive working relationship with staff of partner organizations
  7. Performs special studies in support of climate adaptation program efforts, as directed by the Director of Natural Resources
  8. Works independently and accurately in an area of frequent interruptions and as part of a multi-tasked environment
  9. Performs other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  1. Must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources, Environmental Science, Planning or related studies with two years of relevant experience in the field required; related experience can be considered a substitute for education
  2. Must demonstrate experience and knowledge of current ecosystem and critical habitat issues with a working knowledge of climate issues and how they relate to a changing environment
  3. Must have demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office programs
  4. Must have the ability to communicate information verbally and in written form in clear, concise, accurate and professional manner
  5. Must have excellent research and organizational skills to assure timely and accurate submission of reports and other time-sensitive materials
  6. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information received orally, through data collection or in document handling
  7. Must be able to work independently with little supervision
  8. Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to meet the minimum insurance requirements regarding driving record in order to utilize GSA vehicles
  9. Must be able to meet the physical demands for active field work
  10. Must be able to lift and carry up to 30 pounds
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Long periods of sitting (60% of time); occasional bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing (20% of time); and occasional standing and walking (20% of time). Occasionally lifts/carries up to 20lbs. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to use office equipment with frequent repetitive motion such as writing, typing, cash-handling, paperwork-handling, and phone use. Must possess the ability to view print on a computer screen and/or paper document; the ability to speak and hear exchanging information with end users by telephone Mental/Visual Demands: Frequent mental and/or visual attention to task is required. Occasionally work requires heavy concentration. Frequent interruptions. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination. Working Environment: Work environment is mainly indoors with heat and some air conditioning. Must sit or stand at desk for the majority of shift. Occasionally works alone without benefit of supervisor or co-worker. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Work requires minimal risks which require safety precautions (using some cleaning chemicals for light cleaning). Protective clothing or equipment may be required (goggles, gloves, masks, boots, etc.)
