Description

The Behavioral Health Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the coordination, implementation, and continuous improvement of behavioral health and wellness services offed by the Samish Indian Nation.  This position focuses on program development, outreach, prevention, and referral services and does not include direct clinical counseling or therapeutic responsibilities.  The Coordinator works collaboratively with internal departments, peer support specialists and external providers to ensure culturally responsive, trauma-informed services are accessible to Tribal Citizens.

Principle Duties
  1. Coordinate behavioral health programs, including mental health wellness initiatives, substance use disorder prevention, and community education.
  2. Develop and maintain partnerships with behavioral health service providers, treatment facilities, tribal and non-tribal health systems.
  3. Provide warm hand-offs and referrals to licensed therapists, mental health counselors, and treatment providers.
  4. Support the development and implementation of culturally relevant wellness events and prevention strategies.
  5. Track and report program outcomes and service delivery in compliance with grant and funding requirements.
  6. Lead efforts in community engagement to reduce stigma and increase awareness of behavioral health services.
  7. Collaborate with the Tribe’s Health, Education, Social Services, Housing, Samish Street Outreach, Vocational Rehabilitation and Cultural departments to support holistic wellness.
  8. Assist in identifying funding opportunities, writing grant proposals, and preparing reports for behavioral health-related programs.
  9. Maintain confidentiality and uphold the rights and dignity of all program participants.
  10. Some field-based and site-based work will be required.
  11. Other work-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  1. Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, Human Services or a related field required. 
  2. At least three years of experience in behavioral health coordination, case manager, or community-based wellness programming.
  3. Demonstrated knowledge of behavioral health issues impacting tribal communities.
  4. Strong organization and project management skills.
  5. Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams and community stakeholders.
  6. Knowledge and competence in supporting the cultural, social, and economic backgrounds of a diverse service population with traditionally underserved needs.
  7. Open to change and willing to lead change within the organization.
  8. Professional integrity; excellent work ethic.
  9. Able to manage competing priorities, excellent organizational skills, and good time management.
  10. Ability to provide professionally written or oral reports and evaluations concerning program activities, accomplishments, goals, and objectives.

 Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience working with Indigenous communities.
  2. Familiarity with state and tribal behavioral health systems, funding sources and reporting requirements.
  3. Peer Counselor Certification or Recovery Coach training (preferred by not required).
  4. Experience in grant management and program evaluation.
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: Long periods of sitting, including driving (60% of time); occasional bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, lifting, carrying, and pushing (20% of time); and occasional standing and walking (20% of time). Occasionally lifts/carries up to 20 lbs. Must possess manual dexterity sufficient to use office equipment with frequent repetitive motion such as writing, typing, paperwork handling, and phone use. Must possess the ability to view print on a computer screen and/or paper document; the ability to speak and hear exchanging information with end users by telephone.

Mental/Visual Demands: Frequent mental and/or visual attention to task is required. Occasionally work requires heavy concentration. Frequent interruptions. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination. Working Environment: Work environment is mainly indoors with heat and some air conditioning. Must sit or stand at desk for the majority of shift. Occasionally works alone without benefit of supervisor or coworker. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Due to the nature of engaging individuals who are living in homelessness, some field-based and site-based work is required and may include interactions with distressed individuals. This position requires the employee to work in an environment where there may be exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially infectious materials. Samish Indian Nation provides various levels of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to staff and to clients. Staff must follow safety protocols around masking, distancing, and sanitation as directed by local and state governments as well as recommended Public Health guidance.
