The Elders Transportation & Support Specialist coordinates and provides transportation services for participants in the Samish Elders Program. This role is essential in helping our elders maintain independence and access vital services such as medical appointments, grocery shopping, and social activities. The specialist is a compassionate professional responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of participants during vehicle transportation. 

$1,500 Sign-on bonus to be paid out after successful completion of 180-day trial employment period and obtaining a CDL.

Principle Duties
  1. Works in collaboration with the Elders Department Director to establish the transportation program including routes, policies and procedures, and the program handbook.
  2. Operates the department’s vehicles, including wheelchair accessible vehicles, to safely transport participants to and from their homes, meal sites, events, shopping, local medical appointments, activities at the Elders Center and more.
  3. Timely transports meals and items to homebound individuals.
  4. Completes a comprehensive written inspection of vehicles daily, reporting any conditions of concern to the Elders Department Director, before transporting participants and ensures that the vehicles always have sufficient fuel and that there is always fresh drinking water on board.
  5. Responsible for coordinating and providing a well-timed transportation schedule. Ensures the Elders Department cellular phone is in proper working order before each trip.
  6. Assists participants to and from the vehicles in a safe manner.
  7. Operates vehicles in such a way with patience and skill that road and safety regulations are always followed; reports any traffic violations to the Elders Department Director immediately.
  8. Maintains responsibility for vehicles cleanliness and maintenance.
  9. Works with the Planning Department for the completion of routine maintenance of vehicles (e.g., oil changes); transporting vehicles to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities and implementing an inventory schedule for emergency and first aid supplies.
  10. In the event of an accident/emergency, evacuates participants according to written and practiced procedures and assures that medical emergency procedures are followed; completes a written accident report as required by Samish procedure and other authorities.
  11. Responsible for daily, monthly, and quarterly reporting and other reports as needed.
  12. Maintains strict confidentiality regarding client information and adheres to relevant Tribal, State, and Federal Privacy Laws.
  13. Picks up and delivers food items and supplies from grocery stores or suppliers, as necessary.
  14. Reports the following to the Elders Department Director: presence of animals, vermin or insects; need for cleaning supplies or equipment repairs in advance; water leaks, and other maintenance needs; all other health and safety hazards noticed and reported.
  15. Attends trainings as relevant to staff development plans; maintains current certification for First Aid, CPR, Food Handler’s Permit, health checks; complies with Adult Protective Services (APS) mandated reporting requirements for vulnerable adult abuse and neglect.
  16. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  1. Ability and desire to work with and provide personal care and assistance to frail, elderly, and disabled adults to enhance and encourage their independence.
  2. Ability to maintain a positive attitude and to act with tact, integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  3. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs frequently.
  4. Must have effective organizational, problem solving, and time management skills.
  5. Ability to perform responsibilities under pressure and in cases of accidents or other emergencies.
  6. Must obtain First Aid, CPR and AED certifications within 30 days of hire.
  7. Must pass state, and federal, fingerprinting and background checks.
  8. Accident-free driving record with no moving violations within the last three years.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Three years of experience operating a public transportation vehicle of up to 15 passengers.
  2. Possess and maintain a current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and be able to operate tribal vehicles and buses or be willing to complete training to earn CDL (paid training available if needed).
Working Conditions

Physical Demands: This job involves sitting (30% of time) and standing (40% of time), as well as stooping, squatting, lifting, carrying, pushing and climbing (30% of time). Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs frequently. Manual dexterity sufficient to: manipulate cleaning supplies and equipment, operate vehicle, conduct pre-trip inspections, and clean the vehicle. Ability to sufficiently operate vehicle for extended periods of time, enter/exit vehicle repeatedly throughout the workday, and assist elderly/frail/disabled participants with boarding/exiting vehicle.  Mental/Visual Demands: Frequent mental and/or visual attention to task is required. Occasionally work requires heavy concentration. Frequent interruptions. Tasks involve eye-hand coordination. Working Environment: Tasks may involve possible exposure to blood or bodily fluids. Must be able to withstand exposure to adverse weather conditions. Unavoidable hazards/risks: Risk involved with travel on highways, side streets and rural roads during bus trips. Possible exposure to communicable diseases. Work requires moderate risks which require safety precautions (working around moving parts, chemicals, equipment, etc.). Protective clothing or equipment may be required (goggles, gloves, masks, boots, etc.). Random drug tests will be performed.
